Background and release
Young announced the title and release date of the album via social media on February 9, 2023.[1] The album contains themes of "autobiographical" songs, "metaphorical" songs and "odd" songs, according to Young.[2] Speaking about the overall meaning of the album, he stated;
"The point is that Coco Moon is a very Owl City album. It is quirky. It is odd. It is unapologetically myself. I made an album that is exactly the way it was supposed to be, not an album that popular culture or algorithms, or analytics, or anyone else on planet Earth told me to make. I wrote me."[2]
"Kelly Time" was released on January 6, 2023 as the lead single from the album.[3] The song was inspired by the 2000 film Cast Away.[4] The album's second single "Adam, Check Please" was released on February 3, 2023, which is about Young's first job when he was 16 years old.[5] "Vitamin Sea" was released as the third and final single from the album on March 3, 2023.[6] Young premiered a music video for the song on March 13, 2023.[7]
In support of the album, Young announced the To the Moon Tour that will begin in fall 2023 with support from Augustana.[8]
Composition
The album contains 11 tracks, all written and produced by Young.[2] Young shared the cover art and track listing via social media on March 14, 2023.[9] Young explained the meaning for some of the tracks from the album. "Adam, Check Please" is about Young's first job that he had when he was 16 years old.[10] "Kelly Time" is about "being okay with not always knowing what's gonna happen." The main message of the song is about finding the strength to keep moving forward and moving on and learning to stay optimistic about the future.[10] Speaking about "Vitamin Sea", Young stated, "It's about the everyday kind of hustle of normal life."[10] "The Tornado" explains a story of "a kid who's delivering papers when a horrible storm starts up and forces him to take cover so he won't get swept away."[10]
