Premise

Depicts the story of Miep Gies, who is asked by her employer Otto Frank to shelter his family during World War II.

Historical Accuracy

In a Behind the Scenes video about creating the miniseries, the producer and creator of this miniseries incorrectly mention that Miep Gies was in her 20's when Otto Frank asked her to help save his family in 1942 [2]. In reality, Miep (born 1909) was 33 years old at the time. A different helper, Bep Voskuijl (born 1919) was actually 23 years old at time, the youngest of the outside people who helped the Frank family. While Miep was instrumental in preserving Anne's diary in the aftermath of the Frank family's 1944 arrest, it was Bep during the arrest itself who quickly smuggled notes out of the building that could have implicated the helpers as connected to the Dutch resistance. The scenes shown in the production video do not reveal whether Bep is a character in this miniseries, whether Bep has been merged with the character of Miep. This would turn the Miep Gies of this miniseries into a composite character, a historical inaccuracy.

Cast

Production

It was announced in February 2022 that Disney+ had greenlit the miniseries from National Geographic, which Tony Phelan and Joan Rater will write and Susanna Fogel directing multiple episodes of the series.[3] In April, Bel Powley was cast as Gies, with Liev Schreiber starring as Otto Frank and Joe Cole as Jan Gies.[4] Amira Casar, Billie Boullet and Ashley Brooke would join in June, with Boullet cast as Anne Frank.[5]

Production began by July 2022,[6] with filming taking place between Hradec Králové, Prague and Amsterdam in summer 2022.[4]
