Rinto and Ash

Rinto first appeared in Trials of a Budding Master!. He was first seen at Rock Tunnel, watching the World Coronation Series battle between Ash and Dozer. After seeing Farfetch'd run off after defeating Dozer's Gurdurr, Rinto spoke to Ash about Farfetch'd's huge potential. He then had a battle against Ash and Farfetch'd using his Gallade and won with just one move. Before he left, Rinto talked about the lack of synchrony between Ash and Farfetch'd and that he would like to battle Ash again when they became more in sync.

Rinto reappeared in Beyond Chivalry… Aiming to be a Leek Master!, where Ash re-encountered him at the Vermilion City Pokémon Center and learned that he was also a World Coronation Series participant. He had only recently entered the competition when they first met and was in the Normal Class at the time, hence why Ash was unable to get an official battle notification back then. Now, however, he was in the Great Class like Ash, meaning they could have an official match. When Ash told Rinto about his and Farfetch'd's training with Wikstrom at the Castle of Chivalry, Rinto revealed that he and Gallade had also trained there in the past.

Ash and Rinto chose to conduct their official rematch with the same Pokémon they used in their previous battle. During the match, Gallade sliced Farfetch'd's leek in two, but Ash improvised by having Farfetch'd mimic Wikstrom's Aegislash and use the remaining part of the leek as a shield. With this strategy, Farfetch'd was able to land several critical hits on Gallade and evolve into Sirfetch'd as a result. Rinto intentionally let Gallade take a hit from Sirfetch'd's Night Slash in order to activate Gallade's Ability, Justified. However, despite the power boost provided by this Ability, Gallade was still defeated. Afterward, Rinto admitted his defeat and that he too still had a lot to learn.

Character

Rinto is very observant and analytical, analyzing Ash's Farfetch'd and his battling style. Despite respecting other Trainers, Rinto acted with a certain amount of sarcasm towards Ash in his relationship with his Pokémon, such as ignoring Ash's presence and talking only to his opponent's Farfetch'd.
