Route description

Upon leaving from either the western or eastern terminus, a Trainer must have a Pokémon with Surf to continue, as the route is divided twice over by small lakes. Alternatively, they can pass through Mt. Mortar to the north. On the small landmass between the two, there is a tree that is able to be Cut, leading to a trio of Apricorn trees, much like those on Route 37.

Each of the landmasses on the route also features an entrance to a different part of Mt. Mortar.

In Pokémon Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, Suicune appears on the overworld near the Apricorn trees, but flees if the player gets close.

When interacting with walking Pokémon in HeartGold and SoulSilver, the Pokémon may occasionally show an altered mood specific to this location.

  • Rock-type Pokémon occasionally look at the mountain as if anticipating climbing it.

In the manga

Gold, Silver & Crystal chapter

Route 42 appeared in Absolutely Azumarill. After failing to catch Suicune at the Tin Tower, Crystal found herself unable to catch any Pokémon whatsoever. Moreover, her Pokédex had been broken as she fell from the tower, leaving her unable to track Suicune. She started falling into depression at the thought of possibly failing to fulfill Professor Oak's request of completing the Pokédex, but when her mother, Mirei, appeared before her and saw her sorry state, she angrily snapped at Crystal and told her to retrain herself at Mt. Mortar, where she had originally mastered her catching skills.
