Etymology

Borrowed from an older South Slavic language, possibly from Old Church Slavonic забѣль (zabělĭ) ("enclosed forest"), compare Serbo-Croatian zabijeliti ("to whiten, to mark a tree by cutting its bark"), used in Dušan's Code as ("mark a tree by cutting its bark to show forbidden entrance").[1]
