Etymology

Possibly from a form such as Proto-Afroasiatic *ǯiʔib- (beast of prey). Compare Hebrew זְאֵב (zǝʾēḇ) and Arabic ذِئْب (ḏiʾb) from Proto-Semitic *ḏiʔb- (wolf), as well as Chadic ǯib- “civet”.
