Etymology

From Late Latin ecce hoc, from ecce (behold, voilà) + hoc (this). Compare Italian ciò. The Sicilian pronunciation of Vulgar Latin /kk/ before a front vowel changed to a geminated voiceless alveolar sibilant affricate [t̚t͡s]; cfr. Sicilian fazzu (I do).
