Etymology

Among the variants attested in early sources are xilxi(n) and ixili(li)x. Hence probably from underlying xejn lil xejn or xi lil xi, equivalent to Arabic شَيْءٌ لِشَيْءٍ‎ (šayʾun lišayʾin, “one thing to another”, literally “a thing to a thing”).
