Etymology

Probably from a merger of Arabic شَنَّرَ‎ (šannara) and شَذَّرَ‎ (šaḏḏara), both roughly “to berate, blame, expose someone’s faults, make notorious and infamous, put to shame”. Thence generalised to “revealing, making known” in any context.
