xandar

Maltese

Etymology

Probably from a merger of Arabic شَنَّرَ (šannara) and شَذَّرَ (šaḏḏara), both roughly “to berate, blame, expose someone’s faults, make notorious and infamous, put to shame”. Thence generalised to “revealing, making known” in any context.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈʃandar/

Verb

xandar (imperfect jxandar)

  1. to publicise; to broadcast; to spread (news)
  2. to divulge; to reveal (secrets)
