Etymology

From Proto-Vietic *ʔa-pɔːt, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *puut ~ *puət (to rub, to stroke). Cognate with Arem apùət, Riang puət¹, Khasi syrpud (to rub gently), Mon ဗဗတ် (həpòt, to rub), Khmer ពួត (puət, to rub), Khmu [Cuang] rmpɔːt.
