From local Medieval Latin Vulgar Latin *vereda (“path, main road”), perhaps from Vulgar Latin verēdus (“light breed of horse”), from Gaulish *werēdos, ultimately from Proto-Celtic *uɸorēdos (compare Welsh gorwydd (“horse”)).
