From Old Norse vǫxtr, from Proto-Germanic *wahstuz, cognate with Norwegian vokster, vekst, Swedish växt, English waist, Gothic 𐍅𐌰𐌷𐍃𐍄𐌿𐍃 (wahstus). Derived form the verb *wahsaną (whence Danish vokse).
