Uncertain, but probably related to tyn (“tin”). Perhaps from Old English *tincere, from tin (“tin”) + *-cere (as in bēocere (“beekeeper”)), from Proto-West Germanic *kaʀi, from Proto-Germanic *kazjaz (“vessel-maker”).
