From Middle French toquer, tocquer, most likely from an onomatopoetic root *toc (based on the sound of hitting something), or alternatively from a Old Northern French *toquer, *tocquer (compare Old French tochier), from Vulgar Latin *tuccō, *tuccāre (to strike; to touch) (whence toucher).
