Etymology

From Proto-Germanic *tebrekaną, *twizbrekaną (“to break apart”), equivalent to tō- +‎ brecan. Cognate with Old Frisian tōbreka, Old Dutch tebrekan, Old Saxon tebrekan, Old High German zibrehhan (German zerbrechen).
