Contracted from earlier tēohan; from Proto-Germanic *teuhaną, from Proto-Indo-European *dewk-. Cognate with Old Frisian tīan, Old Saxon tiohan (Middle Dutch tīen), Old High German ziohan (German ziehen), Old Norse toginn, Gothic 𐍄𐌹𐌿𐌷𐌰𐌽 (tiuhan); and, from Indo-European, with Ancient Greek δεύκειν (deúkein), Latin dūcere, Middle Welsh dygaf. Compare tēam, tēag.
