teiniraha

  1. (historical) A tax collected in Sweden beginning in 1624 (Finland was then part of Sweden), the purpose of which was to finance the life of students in higher learning. The tax was abolished in Finland in 1865.
  2. (historical) After the abolishment of tax many students earned money during the summer break by street singing and the term became to mean the contributions given to the student singers.
