teh(t)- + -o, probably from the same root as tehdas (and possibly tehdä). The forms with -ht- are likely original (compare Karelian tehto), and the forms with -h- may be generalized by analogy from the weak stem, although according to SSA, sound symbolicism may have also played a part.[1]
