stopping train (plural stopping trains)

  1. (rail transport) A passenger train that stops at most, if not all, of the stations on the route in the course of its journey.
    • 1961 March, “Talking of trains”, in Trains Illustrated, page 135:
      Most of the through Leicester-Birmingham workings are non-stop between Leicester and Hinckley, leaving the intermediate stations to be served by the largely hourly stopping trains between Leicester and Nuneaton.
