soif
French
Etymology
From Old French soif, from Early Old French seif, seit, from Latin sitis, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰgʷʰítis (“perishing, destruction, decrease”). The -f seems to have been a way to distinguish this word from other words that came to be pronounced as IPA(key): /swa/, such as soit.
