Cognate with Russian смага (smaga, heat), Serbo-Croatian смаг/smag, смагнути/smagnuti (to pine away). Non-Slavic cognates include German schmauchen (to puff away), English smoke, Armenian մուխ (mux, smoke). The relation to Russian смуглый (smuglyj), Sanskrit समा (samā) (and German Sommer) is unclear.
