Etymology

From combinations of different senses of the verb slå and av. The fourth sense is derived from Middle Low German afslān.

Verb

slå av (present tense slår av, past tense slo av, supine slått av)

  1. (transitive) to strike so that it falls off
  2. (transitive) to indulge in (an activity) (but in a positive sense)
    Me slo av en prat.
    We had a chat.
  3. (transitive) to turn off
  4. (transitive) to reduce (e.g. a price or debt or other sum of money)
  5. (transitive, dated) to fire (e.g. a volley)
