Finnish

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈsirkːɑ/, [ˈs̠irkːɑ]
  • Rhymes: -irkːɑ
  • Syllabification(key): sirk‧ka

Etymology 1

From Proto-Finnic *cirkka, probably ultimately an imitative root + *-kka; cognates include Ingrian serkka, Karelian tširkka, Ludian tširkku and Votic širk (the initial consonant is irregular, but might be caused by the imitative origin or the affectionate nature of the word).
