senë
Albanian
Alternative forms
- gjë (Tosk)
Etymology
Gheg form of Tosk senë, from Proto-Albanian *sana, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁s-ónt- (active participle of *h₁es- (“to be”)) (compare Old English sōþ (“true”), Old Lithuanian santi, Ancient Greek ἐών (eṓn, “being”)).
Although archaic, it is still used in rural villages in Kosovo. It did not go through the *s to *gj shift, comparable to the Gheg Kosovo dialect not rhotacising.
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /sænə/
