Finnish

Etymology

From Proto-Finnic *sarvi (compare Estonian sarv), from Proto-Finno-Ugric *śarwe (compare Erzya сюро (sjuro) and Hungarian szarv), which in turn is a loan from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćr̥Hwa-, compare Avestan 𐬯𐬭𐬏 (srū, horn, claw, talon), 𐬯𐬭𐬎𐬎𐬁 (sruuā, horn), Middle Persian [script needed] (slwb' /srū/, horn, nail), Persian سرو (soru, animal horn). Doublet of hirvi. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱerh₂-; see there for more.
