Borrowed from German Rakete, from Italian rocchetta, from rochetto (rocket, literally a bobbin), diminutive of rocca (a distaff), of Germanic origin, perhaps Gothic rukka, from Proto-Germanic *rukkô (a distaff, a staff with flax fibres tied loosely to it, used in spinning thread).
