Etymology

From Ottoman Turkish راقم‎ (rakim, “writer, marker”), from Arabic رَاقِم‎‎ (rāqim), active participle of رَقَمَ‎ (raqama). The semantic shift from an adjective meaning one who draws to a noun related to contour lines drawn on maps came in the late 19th century.
