From Ottoman Turkish راقم (rakim, writer, marker), from Arabic رَاقِم‎ (rāqim), active participle of رَقَمَ (raqama). The semantic shift from an adjective meaning one who draws to a noun related to contour lines drawn on maps came in the late 19th century.
