Etymology

Unclear; from Proto-Albanian *kertsula[1], possibly borrowed from Latin cercellus, circellus (small ring, hoop)[2], ultimately borrowed from Ancient Greek κίρκος (kírkos, ring). Doublet of qark, qarkull. Alternatively inherited from Proto-Indo-European *ker-ḱ-[1] or *kert- (to turn, to bind)[3], or simply qerth + -ull.
