Etymology

Probably from Arabic قاعِد (qāʿid, sitting), used in some dialects to form progressive tenses, originally in the sense “he’s sitting there (talking, drinking, etc.)”. On the other hand, compare Arabic قَد (qad), a modal particle, which does not express progressiveness, however.
