Etymology

Probably from Arabic قاعِد‎ (qāʿid, “sitting”), used in some dialects to form progressive tenses, originally in the sense “he’s sitting there (talking, drinking, etc.)”. On the other hand, compare Arabic قَد‎ (qad), a modal particle, which does not express progressiveness, however.
