From Common Turkic. Analyzable as having the suffix -ovul. Cognate with Ottoman Turkish قراول, قره‌غول, Tatar каравыл (qarawıl), Kazakh қарауыл (qarawıl). Compare also Russian карау́л (karaúl), a Turkic borrowing.
