From Proto-Albanian *plitś(i)-, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)pel-(t-) (to sliver, split off, splinter off).[1] Alternatively from Proto-Albanian *plitja, again cognate to Sanskrit फलति (phálati, to burst, split), Latin spolium (stripped skin).[2]
