Etymology 1
From Proto-Albanian *plitś(i)-, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)pel-(t-) (“to sliver, split off, splinter off”).[1] Alternatively from Proto-Albanian *plitja, again cognate to Sanskrit फलति (phálati, “to burst, split”), Latin spolium (“stripped skin”).[2]
