Borrowed from French plage, from Medieval Latin plagia (“slope, slant; beach”), from Ancient Greek πλάγιος (plágios, “oblique, slanted”). Compare Polish plaża, Italian spiaggia, piaggia, Yiddish פּלאַזשע (plazhe), Russian пляж (pljaž).
