1. (grammar) partial object (object that indicates incomplete action)

• In Finnish the partial object is in partitive case and it is used in the following contexts:
  1. Always in a negative sentence, even if the action is completed:

     En rakentanut tätä taloa.

     I didn't build this house.

  2. Of unquantified things:

     Tarvitsen jauhoja.

     I need (some) flour.

  3. Of abstract topics:

     Köyhät tarvitsevat myötätuntoa.

     The poor need compassion.

  4. When the goal of the action has not been indicated}}

     Mies tutki taulua.

     A man studied the painting.

  5. Of an ongoing, uncompleted action:

     Luen sanomalehteä.

     I'm reading a newspaper.

  6. When the duration of an action is emphasized rather the result:

     Koulua rakennettiin vuosi.

     It took a year to build the school.

  7. With other numerals than one:

     Ostin neljä tulppaania.

     I bought four tulips.
