From Old French orillier. Synchronically analysable as oreille + -ier. Cf. also Medieval Latin auriculāre, substantivized form of Latin auriculāris. Doublet of auriculaire.

The French word coussin is closer to the English cushion. Un oreiller is really a pillow that you put your head on.
