From Middle Dutch ontmoeten, untmuten, entmuten, corresponding to ont- + moeten. The latter verb is from Old Dutch *muoten, from Proto-Germanic *mōtijaną.
The unprefixed form is cognate Low German möten, West Frisian moetsje, English meet, Danish møde.
