Borrowed from Low German Uur, from Proto-Germanic *ōra, *ūra- (“ferriferous sand”), possibly from Proto-Indo-European *(s)wūr-. However, compare Irish úir (“soil, earth”) and Proto-Germanic *auraz (“wet earth, sand, mud”).
