English
Alternative forms
- new half
Etymology
Calque of Japanese ニューハーフ (nyūhāfu, “new half”), from ハーフ (hāfu, “half; person of mixed Japanese and other ancestry”), suggesting that trans women are a new kind of "half" (namely half-male and half-female). ニューハーフ is wasei eigo, from English.
