Etymology 1
From the Old Norse verb nefna, from Proto-Germanic *namnijaną. Cognates include German nennen, not least the other North-Germanic languages Icelandic nefna, Faroese nevna, Norwegian Bokmål nevne, Swedish nämna, and Danish nævne.
