Etymology
Possibly from Sumerian. Otherwise from Proto-Semitic *nūn- (“fish”), or a loanword into Semitic languages. Cognate with Aramaic נוּנָא (nūnā, “fish”) and Mishnaic Hebrew נוּן (nûn, “fish”).
