From Proto-Finnic [Term?] (compare Estonian näsi- in näsiniin), possibly borrowed from Proto-Germanic *natją (compare Gothic 𐌽𐌰𐍄𐌹 (nati)). The semantic development would be "net" > "bast" (which was used to make nets) > "mezereon".
