Inherited from Old Polish musić, musieć, from Old Czech museti, from Middle High German muozen, from Old High German muozan, from Proto-West Germanic *mōtan, from Proto-Germanic *mōtaną, from Proto-Indo-European *mōd-, lengthened o-grade form of *med-. Cognate with Czech muset and Slovak musieť.
