From Old Galician and Old Portuguese mãollo (13^th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Late Latin manuc(u)lus, modified ultimately from Latin manipulus, diminutive of manus (“hand”). Cognate with Portuguese molho and Spanish manojo.
