Probably from a Vulgar Latin *miscitāre, present active infinitive of *miscitō, from Latin misceō (“I mix”). Compare Ladin mescedèr, Venetian mesedar, Romansch mischedar, maschadar, archaic or literary Italian miscidare, mescidare; cf. also mestare.
