From the obsolete genus Melania.

melanian (plural melanians)

  1. (malacology, obsolete) One of a family of freshwater pectinibranchiate mollusks with a turret-shaped shell (Melaniidae), which is now considered a synonym for the family Thiaridae, but also containing many species since reclassified into other families.
