mahti

Finnish

Etymology

From Proto-Finnic *mahti, borrowed from Proto-Germanic *mahtiz (whence also Old Swedish makt, Swedish makt). Probably also influenced by mahtaa. The adjective sense is probably by re-extraction from words like mahtimies, mahtitekijä and further influenced by mahtava.
