- mărăcin, mărăciune
Etymology
Uncertain. Often considered to be from Vulgar Latin *marrucina or *marracina, ultimately from Latin marra (“thorn”), but possibly also from an alteration of Latin malitia with the influence of the Romanian suffix -ciune. Compare Spanish maleza. Compare also the related Albanian mërqinje, with the same meaning as the Romanian word.
