From Ottoman Turkish متبسم (mütebessim, one who is smiling, one who smiles often) from Arabic مُتَبَسِّم (mutabassim, smiling), derived from the verbal noun اِبْتِسَام (ibtisām, smiling) of the verb اِبْتَسَمَ (ibtasama, to smile), from the root ب س م (b-s-m).
