Etymology

From Arabic مُسْتَمْلَكَة‎ (mustamlaka, literally “being taken possession of or dominated”), probably following a word like أَرْض‎ f (ʾarḍ, “earth”), from the root م ل ك‎ (m-l-k) related to kingdoms and possession. Compare مَلَكَ‎ (malaka).
