From mërk, with -osh suffix expressing endearment, from Proto-Indo-European *meri̯o 'young man, woman'. Compare Ancient Greek μεῖραξ (meîrax, knave, boy, girl), Latin maritus (married (of men)), Lithuanian mergà, Old Prussian mergo (girl, bondmaid), Cornish myrgh (daughter, woman).
