From mërk, with -osh suffix expressing endearment, from Proto-Indo-European *meri̯o 'young man, woman'. Compare Ancient Greek μεῖραξ (meîrax, “knave, boy, girl”), Latin maritus (“married (of men)”), Lithuanian mergà, Old Prussian mergo (“girl, bondmaid”), Cornish myrgh (“daughter, woman”).
