From Proto-Finnic *liika (compare Estonian liig, Karelian liika, Veps liig, Votic liikõ), borrowed from Proto-Baltic [Term?] (compare Latvian lieks), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *leykʷ-. Erzya лия (lija, “other, else”) possibly from the same root[1].
